DERDIAN - New Era IV: Resurgence (2023)

It might seem that Marco Garau's departure would lead to the collapse of the Italian band Derdian. After all, Marco played a key role in Derdian's music. He decided to focus on his band, Magic Opera, and that's no surprise. There, he creates great music under his own name. Derdian didn't give up and decided to take us back to their roots, the "New Era" saga. The time has come for the fourth installment of this saga. For years, this band has been delivering top-shelf symphonic power metal, and they've never disappointed. A five-year wait for a new album, but it was worth it. The world will find out on October 10th of this year.

On the new album, Derdian doesn't stick to a clearly defined framework. There are moments that border on symphonic power metal. It also has more melancholic, epic, and sublime moments. There are also elements that are slightly progressive and focus on a fantasy atmosphere. This diversity is the strength of this release. There's no dull moment, no filler that would spoil the overall impression. Everything is cohesive and creates a remarkable whole. Ivan Giannini is an incredible vocalist who can enchant and give songs character and emotional sound. He's the right man in the right place, and it's hard to imagine Derdian without him. It's important to remember that the guitarists leave a lot of heart on the new album. Dario and Enrico deserve praise for their inventive guitar licks, full of interesting transitions and variations. There's a lot going on in this area.

The album features nine tracks totaling 56 minutes of music. The opening track, " The Grim Revenge, " is beautiful and full of various flavors. Italian symphonic power metal at its finest. It brings back memories of the good old days of Derdian and Rhapsody. The atmospheric opening of " The Evil Messiah " is also impressive. A simple, very melodic track, one of the album's biggest hits. Classic power metal that pays tribute to the best bands in the genre. It's powerful! The sublime and perhaps somewhat rock-inflected " Face To Face" is an example of how Derdian can wreak havoc even in slower, more epic tracks. It sounds incredible, though it lacks the fast tempo and sharp guitar lines. The band destroys objects with the speeding "Dorian," a power metal bombshell. A touch of progressive power metal can be heard in the twisted " Black Tymphoon," and once again the band delivers. It's fast, inventive, and full of panache. The ballad " All is Lost " falls a bit short. It seems to lack an idea and an interesting motif that would linger in the memory. Derdian also wanders a bit on the bland and somewhat commercial " Astar Will Comeback, " and overall, the album's ending isn't as shocking as the first half. It's a shame.

Those familiar with Derdian, their music, style, and abilities, won't be disappointed. Derdian is still in top form, and it shows. The new installment of the "New Era" saga is impressive and continues to deliver a wealth of beautiful and noteworthy music. Power metal fans have reason to rejoice, as Derdian demonstrates that they can still wreak havoc without Marco's presence. Look out for the new Derdian!
